The Quest for Audrey 2
Finding and creating props for theatrical productions is always a challenging experience. The job usually starts with the task of rooting through our production team’s cupboards and attics for suitable items before scouring the internet, local theatres and charity shops. We also have a dedicated team who frequently turn their hands to creating props that we just cannot find.
However just occasionally a prop comes along that proves to be slightly more of a challenge… Our latest production requires us to locate an enormous man eating vegetable and so it was with trepidation that some of the cast and production team went to meet the star of the show.
The following report was written by Calum Littley, who will be playing Seymour Krelborn in the award winning Pumphouse Youth Theatre’s production of Little shop of Horrors.
It was a cold wet, windy December morning. Rising at the break of dawn (well nine o’clock, but that’s pretty impressive for teenagers on a Saturday) the team set off on their perilous journey, with three cars travelling in convoy and sat navs set for Hatfield. The quest for Audrey 2 had begun…
After an arduous drive up the A1, we reassembled in the car park at Queenswood School, knowing that Audrey 2 was close by. We could feel her presence and the excitement was building. The anticipation of getting to meet her in the flesh and learn how to get safely eaten by a gigantic serial killer plant puppet was almost too much to handle, it overpowered us and we stormed the school (with I.D. passes from the security guard obviously). After courageously bursting through the doors to the auditorium (in a calm and sensible manner), we came face to face with Audrey 2. However Audrey 2 was ready for us. She was not alone. There were four…
We now faced our deadly enemy and here came the challenge, to tame the mighty beast(s). With the courage of a thousand men Adam Feigony and Sean Lovell stepped forward to take up the task of mastering, not just one of the Audreys but Audrey number 1, 2 and 4. This left Tom Stevenson and Calum Littley to tackle plant number 3 whilst Jonjo Brooks could only look on in horror and wonder how on earth he was going to conquer learning his lines and bing the ‘voice’.
After hours of back-breaking work (and the multiple deaths of Yasmin Freeman), the heroic warriors re-assembled. We were drained of energy and drenched in sweat but the battle appeared to be won. However much more is still to come! To find out what happens next, come to experience the menace of Audrey 2 for yourselves in a spectacular adaptation of the musical The Little Shop of Horrors, at the Pumphouse Theatre from Friday 20th January.
