The HRJB was formed fifty years ago in 1969 with Hugh playing trumpet having
previously played professionally from 1955 with names including Terry Lightfoot,
Bob Wallis, Monty Sunshine and Cy Laurie which numerous tours, recordings and
TV and radio broadcasts. The present band has been continuously active now for
half a century though personnel has changed a bit(!), at clubs, (including the
Pump House on many occasions), concerts, festivals, functions and receptions. We aim to be
entertaining and versatile, playing an un-hackneyed blend of vintage jazz styles such as classic and
revivalist New Orleans, Chicago Dixieland, blues, popular standards and sometimes a touch of
thirties mainstream swing.
Line-up: Hugh Rainey (trumpet/leader); Les Hanscombe (trombone); Brian Hart (reeds &
leader); Tim Huskisson (piano); Ollie Benson (banjo/guitar); Derek Pring (bass); John Baker
(drums).
